Its Time to Turn Beck Off
Its ironic or simply providential that I’m studying and preaching through the prophet Micah who on the Lord’s behalf indicts the leaders, judges, priests, prophets and wealthy of his own capitol and nation in their violent exploitation of the widow, orphan and alien through fraud, extortion and predatory lending. Consider the following:
“Woe to those who devise wickedness and work evil on their beds! When the morning dawns, the perform it, because it is in the power of their hand. They covet fields and seize them, and houses, and take them away; they oppress a man and his house, a man and his inheritance.” (Micah 2:1-2)
“Hear this, you heads of the house of Jacob and rulers of the house of Israel, who detest justice and make crooked all that is straight, who build Zion with blood and Jerusalem with iniquity. Its heads give judgment for a bribe; its priests teach for a price; its prophets practice divination for money;” (Micah 3:9-11)
“Can I forget any longer the treasures of wickedness in the house of the wicked, and the scant measure that is accursed? Shall I acquit the man with wicked scales and with a bag of deceitful weights? Your rich men are full of violence; your inhabitants speak lies, and their tongue is deceitful in their mouth.” (Micah 6:10-12).
Or consider this from the New Testament:
“Come now, you rich, weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you. Your riches have rotted and your garments are moth-eaten. Your gold and silver have corroded, and their corrosion will be evidence against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up treasure in the last days. Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, are crying out against you, and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts.” (James 5:1-4)
Anyone who bothers to read even a sample of the Bible will learn that the Lord is very concerned with justice – in the church, in the market place and the nations. Justice is a mandatory requirement of both old and new covenants even as injustice is a cause of the Lord’s coming judgment and wrath. Justice is an attribute of God’s nature that cannot be ignored without ending up with a distorted view of God. As Charles Spurgeon simply put it – “Our God is a God of justice.” Add to the mix the recent statement by media talk show host Glen Beck that people should depart from churches that mention economic or social justice, as he views them as code-words for covert fascism or communism. This is bizarre coming from Beck, considering that he is a Mormon who as a group have never held to the historic, biblical orthodox Christian faith! I think Beck needs to read his Bible instead of “Latter Day” fairly tales, leave his false religion behind and find a true church to be part of that teaches and preaches the whole counsel of God’s word, instead of surrendering to the demagoguery of the day, be it right or left wing. And I think Christians should turn Beck off, open their Bibles and learn what God does require – “He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8). Learning to do that will take a lifetime and leave little time for listening to demagogues who distort God’s nature and God’s truth.
